تتألف هذه الرواية من سبع حلقات أحداث روائية Episodes قد يتوهم القارئ أنها قصص قصيرة، فحجم كل حلقة قد يصل إلى حجم قصة قصيرة؛ لكن البناء في كل حلقة هو بناء روائي: يصور مرحلة من حياة بايارد سارتوريس وأحداثاً تقع في حياته وحياة رفيقه في الأسرة الزنجي رينجو إضافة إلى عدد من أفراد أسرة بايارد: أبوه، جدته والزنوج التابعين لهذه الأسرة أثناء الحرب الأهلية الأمريكية بعد نصر الشمالين/ اليانكيين، على الجنوبيين وتحرير العبيد الزنوج: الذين من أصل فريقي؛ فتتجمع هذه الحلقات في ذهن المتلقي لتنسج البناء الكامل للرواية دون تفاصيل غير ضرورية لهذا البناء، كما وأن الراوي لهذه الأحداث وهو بايارد سارتوريس نفسه.
وكما قلنا فإن شكل القصة القصيرة هذا يكوّن كُلاً متكاملاً، فهذه القصص عبارة عن مقاطع روائية لا تكتمل إلا مع الأجزاء الأخرى، فكل جزء يكمل الجزء الآخر؛ فلو لم يكن هذا الترابط موجوداً لرأينا هذا النص قصصاً منفصلة الواحدة عن الأخرى؛ أو رواية مهملة البناء مفككة الأجزاء: فعظمة أية رواية تنبع من عظمة بنائها الروائي: تكامل أجزائها الصغيرة وتفاصيلها الدقيقة: الروافد التي تصب في نهرها العظيم.
