""أه، حسناً، ذروة واحدة زائدة أو ناقصة غير ذي أهمية حقاً، أليس كذلك؟" قالت مستخلصة. أعتقد أن حقيقة وإهانة تلك اللحظة حددت النهاية المتأخرة لشبابي. أردت أن أذهب إلى بلد جديد. إلى مكان هادئ بعيد. بعد بضعة أيام عندما سمعت عن افتتاح قسم للفلسفة في جامعة ميتشغان، تقدمت للوظيفة. لم تكن آن آربور هادئة كما فكرت، ولم أكن مستعداً بعد للجلوس والتقدم في السن. لكن مغامرات رجل متوسط العمر قصة أخرى".
الرواية هو جديد الروائي ستيفن فيزينشيي، وقد لاقت صدى نقدي طيب في الأوساط الثقافية والأدبية العالمية كما احتفت به أقلام كبار في الرواية والنقد. تعرض الرواية إلى سني باكرة لرجل بدأ طفولة ورعة في كنف عائلة كاثوليكية، ووسط رعاية رهبان فرنسيسكان. الوالد المحافظ والمعارض للفاشية، والمتخوف من وصول هتلر للسلطة في ألمانيا، قضى طعناً بالسكين على أيدي مراهق نازي، ولمّا يبلغ بطل الرواية السنة الثانية من عمره، بينما فرّت الأم إلى مدينة هنغارية تحت وطأة رعب خساراتها ابنها وحياتها.
يستهلّ الكاتب روايته، بذلك الضلوع الكامل في مجرياتها، وبتلك الحميمية التامة بينه وبين سرده، في رغبته الإيحاء بكتابة سيرة ذاتية، مدققاً ومؤرخاً ومنحازاً إلى كافة التفاصيل، وحاشداً المشاهد والرؤى، التي تصبّ في مصلحة فكرته أو إيحائه إلى القارئ، بأن "في مديح النساء الأكبر سناً" لا تعدو أن تكون قصة حياة الكاتب أو سيرة صباه وشبابه الذاتيتين. وسواء حكى الكاتب حكايته، أو حكى حياة سواه، فهي رواية ذات حساسية فائقة، ومأثرة في سرد تأثيرات "الآخر" على حياة الفرد، أو تماماً كما اقتبس الكاتب من جان بول سارتر: "كل شيء يأتينا من الآخرين.. أن توجد هو أن تكون ملك شخص ما".
