في كتابه "التربية على الحداثة" أو "الحداثة مخرجاص من حكاية الحداثة" يتطرق "علي الشدوي" إلى خصوصية التعليم في المجتمع السعودي، وإرتباطه بحزمة من التابوهات، ولذلك فإن المؤلف يقدم نقده إلى المؤسسة التعليمية التي تتدخل في حياة الفرد المتعلم "فقد اصطنع نظامنا التعليمي تصورات خاطئة عن المتعلمين، وعن ماهيتهم، وعما يجب أن يكونوه في الحياة.
لقد نظم أفكارهم وفقاً لأفكاره عن الدين، وقد كبرت منتوجات نظام تعليمنا حتى هيمنت على المتعلمين..." وعلى هذا يدعو المؤلف إلى نظام تعليمي ينشأ فيه المتعلم وينمي قدراته على "التحليل والتركيب والتقويم"، والإبتعاد قدر الإمكان عن التكرار غير المنتهي للتراث.
إن ما يرومه المؤلف من هذا السجال النقدي هدف واحد: "هو تنسيق مجموعة من الأفكار التي تخرجنا من الحداثة كحكاية إلى الحداثة كواقع، وتدمجها تحت نوع من التربية أو دعوه التربية على الغرابة، ولن يكون هذا النوع من التربية إلا بتعبئة التعليم بمفاهيم الإتصال والعقلانية والتفكير العلمي والتعايش والتسامح...".
وفي ظل هذه الرؤية، سيلاحظ القارئ أن موضوعات الكتاب، يغلب عليها الإطار الشخصي أو التاريخي أو الثقافي الإجتماعي، وقد عرضها المؤلف في فصول قصيرة مبنية على تجربة شخصية أو خبر أو مقولة فلسفية أو علمية أو تربوية لتؤلف فصول الكتاب مجموعاً كلياً للقراءة؟ أي أن الفصول لا تخدم غرضاً بحثياً معيناً من أوله إلى آخره، بقدر ما تخدم روح أفكار المرحلتين "مرحلتنا مرحلة آباءنا وأجدادنا وما حدث فيهما من تدبير سواء أكان تدبيراً مقدساً أو تدبيراً دنيوياً وروح التعليم في تلك المرحلتين، وما يمكن أن يفعله، وما قد يمثله من خطر أو فرصة".
