في روايته (الشّدوي) لا يعتمد علي الشدوي على الوعي بمفهومه العادي وإنما يعتمد على وعي تجتمع فيه لحظات سابقة ماضية وآنية وقادمة في نسق واحد، طالما أن ذهن الشخصيات هو المحرك لحركة المعنى في النص، ويعكس إيقاع الحياة في حركتها المستمرة.
في الرواية يتركز السرد حول صديقان يجمع بينهما التناقض: البرتاوي الذي يدير ظهره للواقع. وأبو الطيور الذي يجلده الواقع. البرتاوي الذي يبدو أصغر من عمره الحقيقي. البرتاوي الصامت، وأبو الطيور الثرثار. البرتاوي الحكيم. وابو الطيور المتهوّر. البرتاوي صاحب النظرة غير المبالية الذي ينظر من قبيل ما يفعله شخص حين لا يلفت انتباهه شيء؛ إنما لمجرد أنه حي. وأبو الطيور الذي تشع عينياه كعيني حيوان بري في حرش من أحراش جبل شذا الأعلى.
عندما مات أبو الطيور، عاد إلى جبل شدا الأعلى بكنيته الأولى أبي السباع؟! في الواقع هذه الأفكار لم يشعها أحد؛ لأنها ليست إلا افكاراً في رأس صديقه البرتاوي. غدا أبو السباع / ابو الطيور عنده شخصيته فوق تاريخية يحاول أن يعيده إلى الحياة حتى لو لم يكن حقيقة إنما تخيل. وليتحول إلى فنتازيا في بيئة غارقة في الشعبية، وعالم يُستعمل فيه الدين لتبرير سلوكات فردية، وهو عالم تشكل موضوعة المقدس هاجسه الأكبر، ذلك "أن المقدس هو شيء من العالم الدنيوي امّحت طبيعته الأولى، وتغيرت ملامحه تحت رغبة البشر. ينتج الناس المقدس مثلما أنتج البرتاوي أبا السباع الذي لم يمت. يقدر الناس أن المقدس الذي قدسوه بات مستقلاً عنهم مثلما أصبح أبو السباع مستقلا ً ...". وبهذا المعنى تحفل رواية الشّدوي الجديدة بكم من الطقوس والعادات والأغنيات والأمثال الشعبية، ما يجعل منها مرآة تعكس ثقافة المجتمع الذي تنبثق منه وتحيل إليه.
