أرسل الله رسوله صلى الله عليه وسلم بالهدى ودين الحق ليبينه للناس كافة، وأمرهم أن يردوا ما اختلفوا فيه إلى الله والرسول، فكان أن ابتعد الناس عن مصادر الدين الأولى (القرآن- السنة النبوية المطهرة)، وعملوا بأهوائهم وآرائهم فأصابوا أحياناً وأخطأوا مراراً. وقد انبرى الغيورون على دين الإسلام لينبهوا الناس إلى حقيقة ما وقعوا فيه من اختلاف وليردوهم إلى الصراط المستقيم.
وقد انتدب مؤلف هذا الكتاب نفسه للقيام بما يراه ضروريا فنبه على أن اعتقاد الفقهاء بالعمل بمضامين أخبار الآحاد حجة أو دليل على نظرتهم البعيدة عن الطريق القويم، والانحراف عن الصراط المستقيم كما يعتقد المؤلف أن لا فرق في الأحكام بين عصر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم والعصور اللاحقة، لأن حلال محمد حلال إلى يوم القيامة وحرامه حرام إلى يوم القيامة، وإن وظائف الأمة معلومة في عهده ومعلومة بعده، وإن كل عمل بالظن مخالف لشرع الله، ومن ظن أن الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم قد غادر الدنيا ولم يبلغ أو يوضح كل أمور دينه فهو كافر.
