في كتابه هذا يزاوج الدكتور "محمد الحداد" بين الطب وعلم النفس بمهنية عالية وهو في طريقه لشرح أعقد موضوعات الطب النفسي، وأكثرها صعوبة من دون المساس بمقوماتها العلمية بل حوَلها إلى مادة يستمع بها القارئ العادي ويستفيد منها كذلك العالم المختص.
وفي هذا العمل يطرق "الحداد" موضوعات متنوعة تمتد من "الوقاية والعلاج والتأهيل من الإضطرابات النفسية"، إلى "التطور الطبيعي للأطفال –دليل الأمهات"،ثم يتوقف عند "الطرق النفسية للوقاية من الانتكاس للكحول والمخدرات"، دون أن يهمل موضوعات أخرى من نمط "الجوانب النفسية والإجتماعية للمسنين"، إلى موضوعات أخرى يطرق من خلالها جوانب نفسية واجتماعية لمرض السرطان، وإضطرابات القلق، والوسواس القهري، وظاهرة العنف المجتمعي، وآثار الحروب والاحتلالات "غزة والعراق" على سبيل المثال وأخيراً المفهوم الإسلامي للموت.
أما الهدف من هذا الكتاب ما أكده "الحداد" في مقدمة كتابه: "يهمني التأكيد على أن المادة المكتوبة لم يقصد بها أن تستعمل كمرجع علمي ولكنها مادة تثقيفية للعامة من الناس يقصد بها إزالة المعتقدات الخاطئة في مجال الطب النفسي، وكذلك مساعدة أهالي المرضى على تفهم ماهية ما يمر به المرض من مشاكل ومشاغل وهموم قد لا يعرفون محتواها ولكنهم بالتأكيد يلاحظون تأثيرها العميق على المرضى الذين يتعايشون معهم وفي كثير من الأحيان لا يعرفون كيف يمدون يد المساعدة إليهم".
