التعذيب بلا شك جريمة ضد الإنسانية. وقد ظهر في عصرنا مناهضة شديدة لممارسة التعذيب، على الرغم من أن التعذيب كان مشروعاً لمدة ثلاثة آلاف سنة على الأقل، وكان جزءاً من القوانين في أوروبا والشرق الأقصى. وعلى صفحات هذا الكتاب القصة الكاملة للتعذيب منذ بدايته الأولى في غابر الأزمنة حتى عصرنا الحاضر.
ويتطرق الكتاب من خلال ذلك إلى شرح العديد من أدوات التعذيب الأكثر وحشية تلك التي كانت تستخدم لشدّ وجذب جسم الضحية من طرفيها، أما مسامير الأصابع فقد تم جلبها إلى أوروبا من روسيا في القرن السابع عشر، ومع بداية القرن العشرين ظهر استخدام التقنيات الجديدة المتمثلة بالأسلاك الكهربائية والمسمى بالتعذيب بالصدمة الكهربائية.
وبعد سرد تاريخ التعذيب تطرق الكتاب إلى النضال ضد التعذيب وذلك من خلال منظمة العفو الدولية التي تعتبر الجهة الأساسية التي تناهض التعذيب. هذا وإن معركتها ضد التعذيب التي ما تزال قائمة منذ أربعين عاماً تبدو أنها بلا نهاية إذ أن استخدام التعذيب ضد السجناء السياسيين والجنائيين لا يزال قائماً في العديد من بلدان العالم.
