إن المم الحية تدرس حياة عظمائها، تستلهم من دراستها لهم المثل الرفيعة، والمزايا الجليلة، ولأجل أن تقتدي بهم، وفي هذه الكتيبات دراسة مختصرة لستة من شعرائنا العظام، هم: الفرزدق بن غالب التميمي، والكميت بن زيد الأسدي، والسيد إسماعيل بن محمد الحميري، ودعبل بن علي الخزاعي، والأمير أبو فراس الحارث بن سعيد الحمداني والصاحب بن عباد لقد كان هؤلاء الشعراء رضوان الله عليهم في المحل الرفيع من الدين والعلم والأدب، لهم المكانة السامية في المجتمع الإسلامي، ولا أدل على ذلك من المؤلفات الكثيرة التي كتبت عن كل واحد منهم.
إن صاحب الأعلام ذكر في ترجمته لكل واحد منهم مجموعة من الكتب التي ألفت عن حياته وشاعريته، وبعضها بأقلام أوروبيين، أضف إلى ذلك كتب الفهارس الأخرى كالذريعة وغيرها، بل إن في كل يوم تخرج المطابع كتاباً جديداً عن واحد منهم، مضافاً إلى الدراسات الأكاديمية المتكررة عنهم، كل هذا يشير إلى مميزاتهم الشعرية والاجتماعية.
