يعد الشاعر "بودلير" أحد أعظم شعراء فرنسا والمؤسس الحقيقي لحركة الحداثة الشعرية في العالم. و"أزهار الشر" من اهم أعمال بودلير في الشعر الحديث، صدر هذا الديوان عام 1855، الآن في نسخته العربية من ترجمة"محمد عيتاني" وتقديم "جان بول سارتر".
ولكي نتعرف على وظيفة الشعر عند بودلير نتوقف عند قوله: أنه قدر عظيم، وقدر الشاعر ألا يلاحظ فحسب بل يصحح كذلك... أن يتجوَل في كل مكان رافضاً للظلم".
إن فكر بودلير لمتسع وعميق اتساع الحياة ذاتها، وبالتالي فمحور الشعر عنده هو ذلك التضاد بين الخير القليل والشر السائد، بين الجمال النادر وبين القبح الشائع. هو تلك الحيرة بين الحب والخطيئة.. بين واقع الأرض وجنات السماء.
في قصيدة أولى يوجهها (إلى القارئ) يقول بودلير: "الحماقة، والضلال، والخطيئة، والشح./ تشغل أذهاننا وتشتغل أجسادنا/ ونحن نفدي حالات ندمنا المحبوبة/ كما يغذي الشحاذون هوامهم/ خطايانا عنيدة، وتوباتنا خسيسة/ ونحن نتقاضى ثمناً غالياً لاعترافاتنا/ ونعود بفرح إلى الطريق الموحل./ معتقدين اننا بدموع حقيرة نغسل جميع اوساخنا (...)".
يضم الديوان(88) قصيدة في الشعر الحديث نذكر من العناوين: أزهار الشر (نص عام 1861)، إلى القارئ، كآبة ومثل أعلى، تبريك، طائر القطرس... إلخ.
