تحدث الكتاب في العصر الحديث عن المقامات كثيراً، ولكن أحداً منهم لم يشر إلى مقامات هامة هي في الحقيقة أقرب إلى الجانب القصصي الفكه منه إلى ذلك الذي ابتدعه الهمزاني، مؤسس هذا الفن ومن أتى بعده.
وهذه المؤلفات هي لمؤلف يمني من أهل حضرموت، عاش في أوائل القرن الثاني عشر الهجري وكان مهاجراً مغترباً، ودخل بعض بلدان الهند متنقلاً بين ريوعها، ووفاء منه لهذا البلد، نجده قد أسبغ على مقاماته أسماء بلدان الهنود، كتلك الطريقة التي اتبعها الحريري وسلفه، حتى ظن من ظن أن المؤلف من تلك البلاد، وهذا يخالف الحقيقة.
فالمقامات هي للعلامة الأديب أبو بكر بن محسن باعبود العلوي، وهو كما أسلفنا من أهل حضرموت، وقد ظل مجهولاً حتى في وطنه الأصلي، ولكنه كان معروفاً لدى العلماء الهنود الذين أشادوا بذكره، ومنهم من شرح مقاماته التي اشتهرت عندهم شهرة واسعة.
ومهما يكن من أمر فإن مؤلفنا جعل من "مقاماته" صوراً اجتماعية، تقترب من الفن المقامي الذي سنه أصحاب هذا الفن من حيث الشكل وتبتعد المضمون بما حوته من قضايا تعالجها مقاماته بأسلوب فني رفيع يتابعها عبد الله محمود الحبشي على صفحات هذا الكتاب، دراسة وتحقيقاً، من خلال تتبع الموضوعات التي خاضها المؤلف ودرس نواحيها.
