هلاً بك عندنا، قال لي الشّيخ. توكتسي حدّثني عنك. فهو صاحبُك. ثمّ أردف وهو يصافحني بيد قويّة ويشدّني إليه: - اقتربْ منّي، فأنا شِبْهُ ضرير، وبحاجة لأن ألمسك للتعرّف عليك. آه! يا ولدي... أشعر بأنّك مهموم جدّاً، وأنّك تحمل حزناً كبيراً. لم يحدّثني توكتسي عن ذلك ولكنّي أراه بقلبي. اقترب أكثر ولا تخفْ. أعطني يدك. هل أنت خاطئ؟ لا تقل شيئاً، دعني أرى. أنت تخشى من الغدر، أليس كذلك؟ من شخص قريب منك جدّاً، تحبّه حبّاً جمّاً (...) أنت في سبيلك إلى ارتكاب بعض الحماقات. لكنّي أرى أنّك ستنتصر بعد مكابدة عناءات كثيرة. يجب أن تنظر أيضاً إلى نفسك بعينِ قلبك، لا تستمع إلى توجيهات هذا أو ذاك. يحيط بك أناسٌ كثيرون منهم سيّئون، ولكن لم يغدر بك أحد. لا تبكِ يا ولدي، فالغابة لا تحبّ الدّموع المالحة ولا الدّم.
