هذا الكتاب هو بالدرجة الأولى محاولة لدراسة تاريخ العلوم العربية بمنهاج جديد. فهو يتناول قضايا عدة تتعلق بهذا التاريخ ويحاول أن يصوغ منها منهجية جديدة تمكن أولا من التوصل إلى حل المعضلات التي ما زالت مستعصية فيه، كما يحاول أن يعيد النظر في العملية ذاتها لكتابة تاريخ هذه العلوم. ولك على ضوء الدراسات الحديثة والنتائج التي تم التوصل إليها مؤخراً. فهو يتناول بالنقد والتفنيد النظريات الشائعة حول مكانة العلوم العربية في سياسات تاريخ العلوم عاقة، كما يتناول علاقة هذه العلوم بالمرافق الحضارية التي نشأت في رحابها. كلك يتناول بالنقد النظريات المتعلقة بإنجازات الحضارة العربية العلمية ومدى تأثيرها على الحضارات الأخرى، وبخاصة الأوروبية منها. وتتناول القضية الأكثر تعقيداً والأكثر أهمية بالنسبة إلى تاريخ الحضارة العربية الفكري، وهي قضية انحطاط الإنتاج العلمي العربي والعصور التي تم فيها والسبب الذي دعا إلى ذلك.
