لقد شاع إستعمال كلمة التربية كثيراً وسارت على ألسنة الناس قديماً وحديثاً، ومع ذلك فهي تعني بمعناها الواقع كل ما يؤثر في حياة الفرد من خلال تفاعله المستمر مع المجتمع، تفاعلاً يؤدي إلى تعديل سلوكه.
وهي عند بعض المفكرين من أوسع الميادين التي لا يمكن أن يحيط بها البحث، فهي ليست قاصرة على مرحلة معينة في حياة الفرد، بل هي عملية مستمرة من المهج إلى اللحد تجري في جميع الميادين والبيئات والأماكن.
وبحسب هذا المفهوم يكون موضوع التربية هو الفرد، وإستناداً إلى ذلك فإن البرنامج التعليمي ما هو إلا محاولة يؤديها المتخصصون للتأثير على نمو الأفراد، ويكون ذلك بإختيار الخبرات التي تنمو بها القيم المطلوبة لهؤلاء الأفراد، وكذلك تنظيم الخبرات.
إن التربية هي الوسيلة والأسلوب الإجتماعي الذي يكتسب به الأفراد طرائق الحياة وقيم المجتمع الذي يعيشون فيه، لأنها أداة رئيسة يعتمد عليها في التعبير عن إرادة التغيير.
والتربية أحد العناصر الأساسية في تحقيق التنمية، لأن جدوى التربية ينبغي أن يقاس بمقدار ما تسهم به، لا في النمو الإقتصادي الكمي فحسب.
اما التربية الإسلامية فتحتل مكانة مهمة في العملية التربوية من خلال ما تتضمنه من أبعاد روحية وتربوية وعلمية وأخلاقية، مستنبطة في القرآن الكريم والسنّة النبوية المطهرة، وهي تهدف إلى بناء شخصية متكاملة ومتوازنة.
والتربية الإسلامية لم تعد مجرد مقررات تعليمية تتصل بالدين الإسلامي وعقائده وشرائعه وأخلاقه، بل هي علم متكامل له أهدافه ومباحثه، وبناء على تلك القناعة ورغم إختلاف وجهات النظر في مجال التربية الإسلامية فقد طرحت مفاهيم تدل على مغزى هذه التربية، فهي إطار فكري يتناول قضايا التعليم ومفاهيم التربية المختلفة في أسسها النظرية ووسائلها العملية، ومصدر هذا الإطار القرآن الكريم والسنّة بصفة رئيسة، ثم تأتي الجهود الفكري لمفكري الإسلام.
