احتل شرح ابن عقيل لألفية ابن مالك مكانة بارزة بين الشروحات الكثيرة التي جاءت على ألفية، ويعود سبب احتلاله لهذه المكانة أولاً لمكانة ابن عقيل ومنزلته بين علماء العربية وثانياً لمنهجه الذي اتبعه من شرحه للألفية والذي تتلخص فيما يلي: أولاً: توسطه من الشرح بين الإيجاز والإطناب، ثانياً: حسن عرضه للمسائل النحوية، واختصاره لها، وذلك لأن غايته من شرحه غاية تعليمية تهدف إلى تقريب قواعد النحو العربي من إفهام المتعلمين وشرحها شرحاً موجزاً مبسطاً. ثالثاً: اعتناءه بمسائل النحو شرحاً وتفصيلاً أكثر من اعتنائه بمسألة الصرف، وذلك يعود إلى أميرين أولهما اشتغاله بالنحو أكثر من اشتغاله بالصرف، وثانيهما أن مسائل النحو وشواهده أغنى من مسائل الصرف وشواهده.
رابعاً: إكثاره من الاستشهاد بالأبيات الشعرية، قد بلغت ثلاثماية وتسعاً وخمسون شاهداً، وبآيات القرآنية، وكل الشواهد الشعرية التي استشهد بها هي لشعراء يحتج بأشعارهم، أي لشعراء عاشوا في العصر الذي عرف الاحتجاج، وهو العصر الذي ينتهي في منتصف القرن الثاني الهجري. خامساً: لاستشهاده بالحديث النبوي الشريف خلافاً لشيخه أبي صيان، سادساً: لمجاراته للمذهب البصري عموماً، وهذا يظهر من إكثاره من الاعتماد على آراء سيبوية، وغيره من نحاة البصرة، ومن مجاراته للبصريين في مسائل خلافيّة دون تسميتهم. سابعاً: عدم اكتفاءه بالشرح، إذ قد يتعداه أحياناً إلى تخطي ابن مالك، أو الدفاع عنه، أو زيادة أوجه أخرى من المسائل، أو تفصيلات أحملها الناظم.
وخلاصة القول: أن ابن عقيل بدلنا من خلال هذا المنهج الذي انتهجه، عالماً أحاط إحاطة شاملة بمسائل النحو ومذاهب النجاة فيها، ثم عرض لهذه المسائل عرض الخبير ذي القدرة الكبيرة على جودة العرض والترتيب والاستنتاج. ولأهمية هذا الكتاب اعتنى الدكتور "محمد الكرباسي" بتحقيق وبالتعليق عليه ببعض التعليقات والتصحيحات والاستدراكات التي توضح ما جاء في الكتاب من نص، كما وعنى بشرح شواهده، وتفصيل الكلام على مقاصده.
