بدأت الرحلة من مدينة صغيرة تقع في غرب كندا، وانتهت عند مشارف الدائرة القطبية الشمالية، ولم يكن يقابل إلا جماعات متفرقة من الهنود الحمر، أغلبهم من قبائل السو والآباش.
وفي أحداث الرحلة، يعرض لنا قصصاً إنسانية عن حياة المستكشفين، وما يتعرضون له من أخطاء ومفاجآت، وبالذات عندما يضلون طريقهم بسبب العواصف والأعاصير، ويصور المناخ النفسي الذي يعيشون فيه، وآلام الوحدة والاغتراب.
ومن خلال القصص، نتعرف أيضاً على جمال الطبيعة في الأنهار والبحيرات، والغابات والأحراش، وما يوجد بها من أنواع الطير، والوحوش والحيوانات والظواهر الفلكية الخلابة، مثل ظاهرة "الأورورا" أي الضوء القطبي الذي يظهر في الليل، ولا يمكن مشاهدته إلا في المنطقة القطبية أو العروض العليا في الأرض.
وفي تلك البلاد البعيدة عن وطنه وعن العالم المعمور يتابع المؤلف الأحداث السياسية التي تمر بها بلاده، خلال فترة من أحرج الفترات في تاريخها المعاصر، ويصور مدى تأثيرها عليه، وعلى علاقاته بالآخرين من حوله.
ومن المعايشة الطويلة مع الهنود الحمر، سجل الكثير عن عاداتهم وتقاليدهم، وأعيادهم، وأفراحهم، وذكرياتهم عن الحروب الطاحنة والمعارك الضارية التي خاضوها.
