يحتوي هذا الكتاب على دراسة مهمة تتصدى لإعادة تحليل النظرية القومية بعد الأحداث الخطيرة التي عصفت بالعالم، كالتطهير العرقي في البلقان، والمذابح القبلية في أفريقيا، والنزاعات الأهلية في جنوب ووسط آسيا، وبتعاظم الخوق الإرهابي من الأجانب في أوروبا، وانتهاءً بالتطورات الأخيرة في العالم العربي.
ويثير هذا الكتاب مجادلات جديدة في شأن الأمة والقومية والحركات السياسية المشتقة منها، والأيديولوجيات المتعددة التي تغلف المصالح القومية. وهو يقترح، لفهم أفضل للقومية، أن تجري مقاربة هذه الموضوعات من خلال ما يسميه الكاتب "البنائية الاجتماعية". وبهذه المقاربة يعرض المؤلف لأبرز أفكار المنظرين القوميين منذ القرن الثامن عشر حتى أوائل القرن الحادي والعشرين، ويخلص إلى القول إن السمة المشتركة للقومية لدى الجميع تتمثل في فكرة الأولوية المطلقة لمصالح الأمة كونها المصدر الوحيد للشرعية، والمحدد الأوحد للهوية. ويعدّ هذا الكتاب إضافة غنية إلى المكتبة العربية، ومرجعًا مهمًا وضرورياً للقراء والباحثين وصُنّاع القرار والمهتمين بالشأن العام، وللدارسين في ميدان الدراسات الفكرية والتاريخية والسياسية.
