ترتبط الزلازل والبراكين معاً في توزعها الجغرافي عبر مناطق الأرض بيابس ها ومائها. وتشترك أيضاً في تعبيرها عن قلق أرضنا في بعض أجزائها، لكونها لا تتشكل عموماً سوى في مناطق الضعف من القشرة الأرضية. غير أنهما تفترقان عن بعض من زاوية النتائج المترتبة عن كليهما، فإذا كان للبراكين وجهان، أحدهما كارثي مدمر، والآخر بنائي أسهم في تكوين المظهر الحالي لبقع شاسعة من سطح الأرض، فإن للزلازل وجه واحد، ألا وهو وجه التخريب والتدمير. ومع ذلك فإن الزلازل والبراكين تمثل في مناطق حدوثها ولحظة حدوثها كوارث بيئية حيوية حقيقية، باتت تقلق الإنسان وتهز مضجعه في بقاع عدة من العالم، وهي كذلك منذ أن وجد الإنسان، ومنذ أقدم الأزمنة الجيولوجية.
إنها ثورات الأرض النابعة من داخلها، مفجرة غضبها بهيئة صخور لاهبة وغازات حارقة منبثقة من داخلها، مندفعة من سطح أرضنا، مثيرة الخوف والهلع، ملحقة الخراب والدمار لكل ما يقع في طريقها. ولو وقف الأمر عند هذا الحد، لهدأت النفوس واستقرت نسبياً في مواطن الأرض القلقة، ولكن أراض تتكسر وتهتز أيضاً بعنف تارة، وبلطف تارة أخرى، محدثة في عنفها خراباً ودماراً لا يوازيها فيه أية كارثة طبيعية. ولو استعرضنا أهم زلازل القرن الذي نعيشهن لكان ضحيتها ما يزيد عن ثلاثة ملايين إنسان.
وقد خصص هذا الكتاب ضمن سلسلة كتب (العلم والحياة) لإظهار مخاطر كل من الزلازل والبراكين في محاولة لتسليط الضوء على كل ما يكتنف هاتين الظاهرتين، مع التركيز على آثارهما الكارثية في البيئة الحيوية والطبيعية، وكان لأهم الأحداث نصيب وافر من العرض، لكونها أمثلة حية معبرة عنهما خير تعبير.
