ثلاث قصص أسكيموية مفعمة بالحنان والدعابة تشير منذ البداية إلى موضوع الرواية الرئيسي: التمزق الثقافي والنفسي الحاصل لدى الأسكيمو في "نوفو-كيبيك" جراء تصادم تأصلهم التقليدي مع إسهامات ما يسمى بالحضارة العصرية.
لقد اكتشفت غابرييل روا، بعد قراءة قصة تشيخوف "السهب" ميلها الطبيعي إلى ربط المشاهد الطبيعية بالأمزجة. وباخت ذات يوم، بأن تلك القراءة البعيدة قد هذبت لديها "أسلوباً للرؤية والتأمل والتقاط الواقع".
إن لازمة "النهر الهادر" هي أحد الغيابات: غياب الضحك، فالأسكيمو شعب ضحوك كف عن الضحك. لقد كانوا، فيما مضى، ينفجرون ضحكاً في أكواخهم الجليدية. لا لشيء لمجرد نعم أو لا. وكان حتى البرد يعد بالنسبة إليهم أمراً "نافعاً وناعماً". فجاء البيض ودمروا كل شيء، ونصبوا أنفسهم سادة.
فهل كان ثمة حاجة إلى إهداء الأسكيمو إلى المسيحية؟ وإلى جعلهم يرغبون في آلة الخياطة "سنجر"؟ ويتذوقون طعم الكرميلا والبرتقال؟
