مع بدايات القرن العشرين نزحَتْ إلى مدينة زحلة جماعاتٌ من السُّريان والأرمن والأشوريّين والكلدان، نزل هؤلاءِ النازحون في بعضِ أحياءِ المدينة، ومارسوا أعمالاً يُجيدونها فطبعوا تلك الأحياء بطابِعِهم، ونجحوا في تكوينِ حضورٍ بارزٍ لهم.
حدث هذا النزوحُ في ظلِّ الأجواءِ التي أدّت إلى إندلاعِ الحربِ العالميةِ الأولى، وهي أجواءٌ مشحونةٌ بالعصبيّاتِ والإضطهادِ الدينيّ وطغيانِ الكثرةِ على القِلّة، فضلاً عمّا يكتنِفُها من مخططاتِ سياسيّة ومشاريع رسم الخرائطِ الجديدة.
ما يعنينا في هذا الكتاب هم النازحون السُّريان الذين بدأت طلائِعُهم تصلُ إلى مدينةِ زحلة إبتداءً من سنة 1908، قادمين من مناطق ماردين وطور عابدين وديار بكر وأمكنة أخرى، وهي مناطقُ في شرقِ تركيا محاذيةً لمنطقة القامشلي في الشمالِ الشرقي من سوريا.
