لم ينشر روب – غرييه طوال أكثر من نصف قرن من العمل الإبداعي إلا مجموعة قصصية واحدة عنوانها "لقطات" صدرت سنة 1962 عن دار مينوي الباريسية.
غير أن ما يميز أشياء روب – غرييه أنها لا تعرف الكلام ولا تجيد تمرير الرسائل لأن الكاتب لا يبيح لشخصياته أن تُسقط عليها شحناتها الإنفعالية.
أشياء روب – غرييه لا تملك غير سمة واحدة: إنها "هنا" وفقط وليست "هنا" لكي تواصل معنى ما أو تحيل إلى فكرة ما، من أجل أن يوفر للرائي فرصة السيطرة على حركة العين ويتيح لهذه الأخيرة إمكانية التجوال المستريح والمتكرر في فضاء المكان والإسهاب في وصف محتوياته القليلة، بنى روب – غرييه عالم قصصه الفني على إقتصاد شديد في كل مفردات القص، فقصصه لا تحوي شخصيات كثيرة وأمكنته ضيقة غالباً ولا تتعدى أن تكون: غرفة، صالة درس، جزءاً معزولاً من شاطئ لا يرتاده كثيرون، زنزانة سجن، مقهى أو بيتاً مهجوراً.
ليس في هذه الأمكنة غير أشياء جامدة وقليلة لا تتفاعل مع بعضها ولا مع الشخصيات التي تقاسمها الحيز لكنها، أي الأشياء، هي من تحدد شكل النص وتصيغ مساره السردي وتعيّن له صفة خطابه الجمالي.
