البصمة وسيلة لتحقيق شخصيّة صاحبها وتحديد ذاته على وجه اليقين كما تبيّن حركة الفاعل في مسرح الجريمة، وتبيّن عدد الجناة، وإمكانية التحديد التقريبي لحرفة أو المهنة صاحب البصمة، وبعض الأمراض الجلدية لدى صاحبها وخاصّة التي تؤثّر على الخطوط الحلمية المكوّنة للبصمة.
وإن لمسرح الجريمة أهميّة في مجال التحقيق والبحث الجنائي حسب مركّبات عناصر الجريمة وخاصّة في مجال كشف الغموض الذي يكتنف بعض الحوادث الجنائيّة فهو مستودع أسرارها ومنه تنبثق كافة الأدِلّة وهو بمثابة الشاهد الصامت الذي إذا أحسن المحقّق الإستدراج حصل على معلومات مؤكّدة.
إنّ دور البصمة أصبح لا يقتصر على إثبات الهويّة والدليل الصامت في مسرح الحادث والشاهد على صاحبه بل تعدّدت وشملت أمور كثيرة فأصبحت الشفرة الخاصة والتي لا يمكن أن تتكرّر بين شخصين، وتعتبر البصمة الوسيلة الوحيدة المضمونة والمأمونة كشفرة لا يمكن تقليدها أو تزييفها، ولعب (علم البصمات) دوراً بارزاً في خدمة العدالة، من خلال إكتشافه الكثير من الجناة وأصحاب السوابق الذي اقترفوا جرائمهم وتم تقديمهم إلى المحاكم.
دور علم البصمات في مسرح الجريمة من ثلاثة أجزاء:
1-أسلوب الإظهار والرفع.
2-البصمة الفرديّة وأسلوب التصنيف والحفظ.
3-البصمة الغائرة للكّف والقدمين.
