يعد مسرح الجريمة ذا أهمية كبيرة في مجال كشف الحوادث الجنائية لكونه مستودع أسرارها، ولكونه المكان الذي وقعت فيه الجريمة فإن هذا المسرح توجد فيه آثار مادية كثيرة، فالمجرم مهما كان حريصاً لا بد أن يترك أثراً يدل عليه ويكشف سره، والمشكلة تكمن في مدى المحافظة على هذه الآثار وإمكانية نقلها وفحصها لمعرفة ظروف وملابسات الحادث.
فمسرح الجريمة بالمفهوم الجنائي هو المكان الذي ارتكَبَ أو كان من المحتمل أن يرتكب فيه الجاني تصرفات قبل وقوع الجريمة وأثناء وقوعها وبعده، وترك فيه آثاراً تدل على إرتكاب الجريمة بعلم أو بدون علم.
وبما أن تحديد مسرح الجريمة والمحافظة عليه وعلى الآثار الموجودة فيه هو المفتاح لحل لغز الكثير من الجرائم الغامضة، فإن مهمة المحقق هذه تتطلب أن يتصف بصفة الباحث الجنائي والخبير في مسرح الجريمة، وبالتالي لا يقوم بهذه الأعمال إلا من يكون على دراية ومعرفة بكيفية الكشف على مسرح الجريمة والمحافظة على الآثار ورفعها وتحريزها وكيفية التعامل معها للحفاظ عليها حتى يمكن إستنباط الدليل الجنائي الذي يثبت وقوع الجريمة ونسبتها إلى مرتكبها.
وفي عمليات البحث الجنائي عاملان مهما هما الزمان والمكان، ولما كان الوقت يمر بسرعة فإنه من الصعب أن نطوعه لإغراضنا، في حين أن المكان يتميز بالثبات والإستقرار ومن ثم فإنه يحتفظ عاده بآثار الجريمة التي وقعت فيه، وبالتالي يتعين على الباحث الجنائي أن ينتقل إلى مكان وقوع الجريمة بأسرع وقت ممكن وذلك لغرض الحفاظ على الآثار من التلف بسبب عوامل الجو الطبيعية أو تدخل الأشخاص الفضوليين أو قيام الجاني بالعبث بمسرح الجريمة لغرض إخفاء معالمها.
