في هذا العصر المليء بالتغيرات، يقف علم نفس النمو وجهاً لوجه أمام تحدي التغيير الثقافي الاجتماعي، الذي يحدث في كل مجتمع. من هنا كان من الطبيعي أن يجد المعلم والمتعلم نفسهما أمام معطيات جديدة لا بد من مواجهتها والتكيف معها، خاصة في المجالين التربوي والنفسي. وبما أن التربية هي هضم المعلومات، والتجارب الضرورية للطفل والمراهق، فهي مدعوة اليوم-أكثر من أي وقت مضى-إلى المساهمة في تغذية الطفل وتنشئته على قيم هادفة ضمن إطار تربوي دميل، ثم صقلها وتطويرها كلما دعت الحاجة وعند الضرورة. وبما أن علم النفس هو علم دراسة السلوك الإنساني، والحقائق النفسية، كما هي، كان لا بد من دخوله إلى عالم التربية عند الطفل والمراهق من بابه الواسع، خاصة في مجال التعليم الذي لا يمكن فهمه بشكل صحيح، إلا بعد دراسة أسسه النفسية المتمثلة في عملية النمو والنماء عند الكائن الحي منذ ما قبل الولادة وحتى اكتمال النضج، وذلك في جميع المجالات: الجسمية والنفسية والعقلية والروحية ونحوها، حتى يتمكن المربي من فهم الطفل، والتكيف مع حاجاته، ورغباته، وميوله، واتجاهاته وقدراته واستعداداته. لذلك كان لا بد من دمج التربية مع علم النفس للتمكن من ترجمة الأهداف التربوية العامة والخاصة إلى أسلوب المقومات السلوكية للمساهمة في تربية الناشئة تربية سليمة... لهذا الهدف جاء هذا الكتاب الذي يتطرق إلى دراسة النمو ضمن المجال النفسي-التعليمي، مروراً بالذكاء وأهميته في عملية النمو ليس فقط للأطفال العاديين بل للموهوبين والمتخلفين أيضاً.
