إن محاولة البحث في سؤال أصل الوجود والحياة مع برغسون لا بد أن ينطلق من التمايز بين المادي والروحي، ولعل إمتداد حدود الصراع المادي الروحاني لتتداخل معه مواضيع الفلسفة والعلم خصوصاً، كان هو المرتكز الأساسي لنشوء فلسفة برغسون وتساؤلاته حول أصل الزمان والوجود، فلم يكن سؤال الأصل لدى برغسون مرتبطاً بالبحث العلمي بقدر ما كان محاولة مقاربة المعطيات الشعورية التي يعمد العلم دوماً أن يضعها في سياق البحث الآلي الميكانيكي، مقاربة روحية محضة.
فلربما يبدو من السهل البحث والإجابة عن أصل الموجودات المادية، بيد أن السؤال عن أصل المشاعر وإلى ماذا تستند في وجودها وأصل الزمان والوجود، فلم يكن سؤال الأصل لدى برغسون مرتبطاً بالبحث العلمي بقدر ما كان محاولة مقاربة المعطيات الشعورية التي يعمد العلم دوماً أن يضعها في سياق البحث الآلي الميكانيكي، مقاربة روحية محضة.
فلربما يبدو من السهل البحث والإجابة عن أصل الموجودات المادية، بيد أن السؤال عن أصل المشاعر وإلى ماذا تستند في وجودها وأصل الزمان وحقيقته هو تساؤل معّقد ومشروع، فقد يعجز العلم أن يجيبنا في غالب الأحيان عن السؤال: من أين تأتي المشاعر؟ وإلى ماذا تستند في وجودها؟ وعن ماهية الحرية الإرادية التي يشعر بها كل كائن في داخله؟.
ولهذا ارتبط سؤال الوجود في فلسفة برغسون بالبحث في موضوع الزمان وإدراك حقيقته، ليشكل هذا المفهوم محور البحث الفلسفي في فهم كل ظواهر الوجود سواء المتعلقة بالذات الإنسانية أو المتصلة بالوجود العيني الخارجي، فتأسس كوجيتو برغسون خلافاً لكوجيتو ديكارت وهوسرل، وفق عبارة "أنا أحيا في الزمان المستمر إذا أنا موجود".
ومن هنا، صار الزمان أو بالأحرى فهم الزمان هو المشكلة الحقيقية التي تستدعي البحث فيها لتحديد الملامح الحقيقية لوجودنا الخاص والعام.
