ليس للغة الصينية حروف هجائية بل لها مقاطع -تتألف الكلمة إمّا مقطع واحد وإما مقطعين، ونادر أما تكون من ثلاثة مقاطع. في الصين لجهات كثيرة بسبب كبر البلاد، إلا أن الماندرين وهي لغة بكين والشمال تعتبر اللغة الرسمية لعموم الصين. كل مقطع في لغة الماندرين ينتهي لفظه بحرف صوتي (علّة) أو "ن" أو "نغ" أو "ر". أما في اللغة الصينية مثلاً مقاطع ألفاظها تنتهي بحروف أخرى مثل الباء...
أما بالنسبة لكتابة اللغة، فتكتب حالياً في اليسار إلى اليمين. إلا أنه يمكن كتابتها من اليمين إلى اليسار أو من الأعلى إلى الأسفل. والهدف من هذا الكتيب الذي بين أيدينا والذي هو واحد من سلسلة كتب جاءت حول "تعليم اللغات" هو تعليم الراغبين بالسفر إلى الصين أسس مبادئ اللغة الصينية وكذلك إطلاعهم على الكلمات والتعابير المهمة التي يمكن لهم أن يستخدموها خلال تنقلاتهم في الصين سواء في المطار أو الفندق، أو المطعم، أو حتى خلال وجودهم في مكتب الجوازات أو التكسي... كما ويهتم هذا الكتاب باطلاع الراغبين بتعلم اللغة الصينية على القواعد اللغوية للغة الصينية الأفعال والضمائر والأعداد.
