ديوان أبي طالب الذي نقلب صفحاته ليس من نمط دواوين الشعر الأخرى التي ينهض الباحثون لتحقيقها، ليمثل كل واحد منها أدب عصره ومصره، في خصائصه وأساليبه، وصوره وتراكيبه، ولتنحصر فائدته أو معظمها بدارسي الأدب ونقاده المعنيين بتقسيماته الزمنية أو الطبقية، وسماته الحضارية والفنية، دون غيرهم من جمهور الدارسين والمتذوقين. إنه ديوان من نمط آخر قليل، يضمّ إلى جانب الحكاية الصادقة لأدب ذلك العصر في هيكله العام وخطوطه العريضة، خلاصة وافية بما يتطلبه المهتمون بقضايا التاريخ والسيرة الشريفة والمعنيون بمفردات اللغة وشواهدها الشعرية ونصوصها الموثقة واشتقاقاتها النادرة. فكان-بهذا التميز والخصوصية-تحفة نفيسة من تحف التراث الخالدة ودرة لامعة من درر الأدب الأصيل، ومصدراً قيماً من مصادر البحث في الشعر الذي أتيح له أن يواكب نهاية عصر وبداية عصر. فيغير عن مجمل خصائصه وملامحه وأفكاره عن ذيول فترة مظلمة دابرة، وإطلالة عهد مشرق مؤمل. وحسب هذا الديوان قيمة وأهمية ووزناً، أن يكون ناظم عقده ومبدع فرائده "شيخ الأباطح" بل "شيخ قريش ورئيس مكة".
