يجمع هذا الكتاب بين اثنين من أبرز أعمال الأدب الأسكندنافي الذي يعود إلى عصر الفايكنغ. أما العمل الأول فهو ما يطلع عليه اسم "الرونيات"، وهي عبارة عن قصائد مكتوبة بالنقوش الرونية، أي بالأبجدية الجرمانية القديمة التي شاع استخدامها قبل أن تكتسح الأبجدية الرومانية أقصى بقاع الشمال الأروربي. ولا تعرف هذه الأبجدية اليوم إلا قلة محدودة في الغرب، ويتناقص عدد هذه القلة أكثر عندما يتعلق الأمر بالقصائد الرونية اليت كتبت أصلاً لتعليم الناس "الفوثاركية الجديدة" (أي الأبجدية الرونية المعدلة التي شاعت في عصر الفايكنغ). أما في عالمنا العربي، فمن الطبيعي أن يكون جهلنا بهذه المسألة أكبر. ومن الأرجح أن يكون الباحثون العرب الذين لديهم أي إطلاع على الرونات (ج.رونة) ممن يدرسون تاريخ اللغة الإنكليزية.
أما العمل الثاني فهو "النبوءة"، وهو عبارة عن قصيدة تروي فيها عرافة قصة الخلق كما تخليها الإسكندنافيون منذ ما قبل عصر الفايكنغ إلى مقدم المسيحية إلى البلدان الإسكندنافية.
