إن أساس الدين كتابٌ وسُنّةٌ، والسنة منها صحيح وضعيف، ومن المقرر عند العلماء أنه لا يحتج من السنة إلا بالحديث الصحيح، ولا تطلق الصحة على حديث يجمع شروطاً هي: 1-اتصال السند في جميع طبقاته. 2-ثقة الرواة وعدالتهم. 3-عدم الشذوذ. 4-عدم العلة. وموضوع البحث الذي يتناوله هذا الكتاب هو في الحقيقة مرتبط بشرط مهم من شروط الحديث الصحيح وهو أن يكون السند متصلاً. إن هذه المسألة هي من المسائل العملية التي يحتاج الباحث في علم الحديث إلى تطبيقها في حكمه على الأحاديث التي يتصدى لنقدها خارج الصحيحين، ثم إن بحث هذه المسألة عن الإمامين البخاري ومسلم يأخذ أهميته من كون الإمام مسلم أول من أثار هذه المسالة وناقشها في "مقدمة صحيحة" ومن كون الإمام البخاري أكثر في كتبه النقدية "كالتاريخ الكبير" و"التاريخ الصغير" وغيرها، من الكلام على الأسانيد بعدم ثبوت السماع فيها. لذا كان من المناسب أن تعرف شروط الحديث الصحيح وتفريعاتها من كلامهما وصنيعهما.
