منذ شبابه، حين قتل جده بقربه في القدس، كانت حكاية الحسين مذهلة ومثيرة. أصبح ملكاً في 2 مايو 1953 وواجه أول أزمة سياسية في 4 مايو 1954 حين أقال رئيس وزرائه وهو في التاسعة عشر من عمره. أدى طوال خمسة عقود تقريباً دوراً أساسياً في شؤون الشرق الأوسط.
وحين توفي من مرض السرطان سنة 1999 كان، إضافة إلى الملكة اليزابيت، من بين زعماء الدول الأكثر أمداً في السلطة، نجا من عدة محاولات اغتيال وتزوج أربع مرات، مرة من امرأة إنكليزية ومرة من أميركية، كان شخص مزيج من البدو والحضر يشعر بالراحة في الخيم مع البدو مثلما يفعل أمام أجهزة التحكم في طائرة بوينغ 747، والواقع أن مجيء الكثير من زعماء الدول، المتفاوتين جداً أو حتى المعادين لبعضهم، للمشاركة في جنازته إنما هو دليل ساطع على رجل استثنائي، هذه هي قصته.
