إن قصة الحب بين الرجل والمرأة تشبه قصة "فلين يغامران سوية بدخول غرفة مظلمة فيبحثان عن باب فيجدان "أبواب الحب مغلقة" فيحاولان فتح الأبواب ليطلعا على "عجائب الحب" ويتعلمان أن للحب تسعة وتسعين باباً يستطيعان فتح أي منها إلا واحدة إذا انفتحت غلقت جميع الأبواب الأخرى –إنه باب الغيرة.
ومن عجائب الحب أن المحب يرى المحاسن كلها في وجه من يهوى وإن "القرد في عين أمه غزال" وأن ملء العين حبيبها وأن القمر على سطح الحبيب أجمل منه على سطوح الناس... فإذا أردنا أن نقول "شيئاًُ عن الحب" قلنا: لا يعرف عمق المحبة إلا عند الفراق، وأن المحبة لا تملك شيئاً ولا تريد أن يملكها أحد، وأن الحب الذي لا يتجدد عبودية وأسوء ما في الحب الوقوع في "بئر الحرمان" من الحبيب وأسوء من ذلك الحرمان من الحب أصلاً وهذا ما يعانيه العديد من الفتيان والفتيات بانتظار الفارس الموعود القادم على حصان أبيض، غير أن هذا الفارس قد لا يأت أو يأتي ولا يحفل به أحد.
ومن صفات الحب العجيبة أن يسير إلى "موطن الأسرار" فتتغير نبضات القلب وتحدث ارتعاشة في الأنامل ويتعثر اللسان وكأن "الحب آثم".
نعم إن الحب آثم إذا وجدت المرأة نفسها في بيت رجل يغمرها بأمواله وعطاياه ولكنه لا يقدر أن يلامس قلبها بشعلة الحب، ولـ "استعادة الفردوس المفقود" علينا أولاً أن نحلم مثلما تفعل الحقول الحزينة عندما يطؤها الخريف فتحلم باستعادة الربيع والأنوار والإزهار وعودة الطيور إلى تغريدها وحبها.. فنحن نعلم أن "لكل نصبيه من الحب" وعلينا أن لا نتعجل قطف الزهرة قبل تفتحها أو أكمل الثمرة قبل نضوجها.. فقد يصادف الرجل امرأة فيجدها جامدة كفكرة مسبقة لا تقبل النقاش وعلى العكس قد يجدها سهلة القراءة فتنبت البذور في أرض طيبة.
في إطار بحث هذه الموضوعات يأتي الحديث في هذا الكتاب والذي تشكل مادته نصوص رسائل كان الكاتب خطها لأولاده في المهجر حيث حدثهم فيها عن موضوعات متفرقة تتخطى حدود العائلة والمنزل والمجتمع إلى الحياة والكون والعلاقات الإنسانية.
