كان أبو العباس أحمد القباب وصنف هذا المختصر من المولعين بكتاب ابن القطان "النظر في أحكام النظر" وقد عبر عن إعجابه به قائلاً: (هو كتاب جليل القدر عظيم النفع فقير المثال). وهذا الإعجاب حدا به إلى اختياره لتقديمه لطالبي معرفة أحكام النظر مختصراً مجرداً عن الأدلة تيسير لتناول المسائل المطلوبة فيه، قال: "الداعي إلى اختصاره أن بعض أهل الدين الباحثين عما يلزمهم في أمور دينهم، ممن ليس لهم باع في العلم، إذا رام طلب مسألة منه يشق عليه استخراجها منه، لما اشتمل عليه الكتاب من سياق الأدلة من الكتاب والسنة والحجج، مما ليس فيه للمريدين إرباً، وإنما ينتفع بتلك الأدلة والحجج الخواص من أهل العلم.
فقصدت التجريد مسائله ليسهل على المبتدئين والمريدين النظر فيه، ومختصر أحكام النظر للقباب ليس من نوع المختصرات التي شأنها الإيفال في الإيجاز بل هو سهل العبارة، واضح المعاني وإنما عمد صاحبه إلى تجريده من الموضوعات الحديثية التي أسهب فيها ابن القطان بحكم تجرده من علوم الحديث وشغفه بالتخريج والنقد وتتبع الأسانيد والحكم على رجالها، وبذلك خلا المختصر من الأدلة النقلية، وأصبح في عداد أغلب كتب المذهب المالكي التي تعتن بربط الأحكام بموادها ومصادرها، وقد يكون ذلك مراعاة لحاجة القارئ واهتمامه ومستواه وثقته بالعلماء، فيقرأ كتبهم ولا يطالبهم بالدليل.
وبالعودة لمضمون كتاب "النظر في أحكام النظر لابن القطان" والذي هو الكتاب الأصل لهذا المختصر نجد أنه يندرج ضمن مؤلفات فقه النظر، وله مكانته السامية بينها وذلك لما فيه من توسع في بيان أحكام جميع مسائل النظر وصورة وجزيئاته في حياة الفرد والأسرة وفي الحياة الاجتماعية التي كان العبيد يمثلون طبقة فيها، وتقتضي علاقتهم بأسيادهم الاجتهاد في مسائل ما يبدو وما يستر وما يجوز رؤيته وما تمنع.
ونكاد نقطع بأنه تناول جميع مسائل النظر واستوعب جميع أحكامها، كما يبدو من قراءة الفهرس التفصيلي للموضوعات الذي أدرجه المحقق وأدرفه بالمختصر، كما واعتنى المحقق بالتقويم للكتاب ببحث موسع شمل ترجمة للمؤلفين ابن القطان وأبو العباس أحمد القباب هذا إلى جانب توطئة تعرف بأسلوب كل منهما في كتابة "المختصر" وكتاب النظر، كما واهتم المحقق بتخريج الأحاديث والآثار الواردة، في متن المختصر وبشرح بعض العبارات الغريبة الواردة فيه والتي تقتضي الشرح.
