تُعد سيرة يوليان واحدة من أهم سِيَر الأباطرة الرومانيين، نعته المسيحيون بالجاحد، والمفكرون سمّوه الإمبراطور الفيلسوف. فعند استلامه العرش، ألغى المسيحية كديانة رسمية للأمبراطورية الرومانية، ونادى بحرية كل الأديان. أعاد للفلسفة والفكر الإنساني ألقهما ومنحهما الحرية المطلقة. في طفولته ماتت أمه ولمّا يبلغ السابعة من عمره وأُعْدِم الأب في حملة تصفيات الصراع على السلطة التي قادها إبن عمه، قسطنطينوس. أما هو فقد أُبعد عن العاصمة إلى أثينا وكان لما يزل صغيراً. وفي أثينا انكب على دراسة الفلسفة. بُعَيْد بلوغه الشباب اهتزت الإمبراطورية تحت ضغط المتمردين وهجمات القبائل الجرمانية، فلم يجد قسطنطينوس بداً من استدعاء يوليان كي يقود الجيوش في الغرب.
على هذا النحو وجد يوليان الفيلسوف نفسه فجأة في خضم الحرب وهو الذي لم يُتح له يوماً معرفة شيء عنها. ما من أحد توقع له سوى الفشل، بل كان الكثيرون يهزؤون من تسلمه هذه المهمة. غير أن يوليان استطاع في وقت قصير أن يجمع بشكل مدهش، الفسفة والسياسة وعلى رأسهما الحرب وأصبح إمبراطور روما المميز. وقلب الأوضاع رأساً على عقب. ومن ثم تحول نحو الشرق ليدحر جيوش الفرس. إنها سيرة مثيرة وممتعة في آن واحد.
