يَسْعَى هذا الكتاب إلى تأصيلِ نظريَّةٍ عربيَّةٍ في فَهْمِ النَّصِّ وتذوُّق بلاغته، وهي نظريَّة القرائن، وذلك باستجماعِ أجزائها المُفرَّقةِ في كُتبِ البلاغةِ وما يتَّصِلُ بها من علومٍ تَضرِبُ إليها بجذورِها، أو تمتدُّ إليها أفنانُها، أو تجري إليها روافِدُها؛ ثُمَّ بيانِ أثرِ تلك النَّظريَّةِ في علم المعاني، لتعميق مضمونِها، والبُرهان على أنَّها صالحةٌ للتَّطْبيق على مُختلِف صُوَر النَّظْمِ في الكلام البليغ.
ولاختيارِ هذا البحثِ أسبابٌ: منها: أنَّ ما كُتِبَ عن القرائن لا يكادُ يَسْعَى إلى ذلك التَّأْصيل الدَّقيق، والنَّظَرِ الشَّاملِ الذي يحلُّ ما يعرِضُ لجوانبِ هذه النَّظريَّةِ من مُشكلاتٍ، وأنَّ تلك البحوث خلَتْ من دراسةٍ تعرِضُ لعلم المعاني الذي يتجلَّى فيه أثرُ القرائنِ غايةَ التجلِّي.
ومنها: حاجةُ دارسي البلاغةِ إلى منهج عربيٍّ أصيلٍ يُمكِنُ به تحليلُ الكلام العربيِّ، وتطويرُ علم البلاغةِ بفَحْصِ أمثلةِ البلاغيين في فنونِها، وتحليلِ تلكَ الأمثلةِ باستحضارِ سياقاتِها وما يحتفُّ بها من مقاماتٍ وأحوالٍ، ليكون ذلكَ أعونَ على إدراك الأسرار البلاغيَّة المُودَعةِ فيها؛ ويمكنُ به الاستزادةُ من أمثلةِ بعضِ الفنونِ التي شحَّتْ أمثلتُها في كُتُب البلاغة، أو افتقرَتْ إلى أمثلةٍ من فصيح الكلامِ؛ ومتابعةُ الطَّريق التي رسمَها أئمة البلاغةِ في تتبُّع كلام البلغاء لاستخراجِ فنونٍ بلاغيَّةٍ جديدةٍ مُستنبطَةٍ من كلامِ العرب وأساليبهم، جاريةٍ على منهج علمائِنا في التَّتبُّع والتَّهَدِّي إلى الأسرارِ البلاغيَّة، لإتمامِ ما بنوا وتشييد ما امتهدوا.
