احتلت ظاهرة الاستشراق حيزاً هاماً من تاريخ البشرية، ومن الحياة العربية الإسلامية، وكوّنت عبر مختلف الحقب والأزمنة معلماً رئيساً في مجال الفكر والثقافة والأدب. وانطلقت من دراسة الآثار العربية والإسلامية، واستطاعت أن تنقل علوم الشرق إلى الغرب، الذي أقام نهضته وبلغ أعلى مستويات التقدم والازدهار. ومن ثم أثرت في نهضة العرب المعاصرة والحديثة، وصبغت حياتهم بأوجه ظاهرتها المختلفة الإيجابية والسلبية، وبموضوعاتها الواسعة الأدبية والسياسية والدينية والتاريخية التي جعلها الدكتور منذر معاليقي مدار لبحثه في هذا الكتاب الذي يهدف به إلى المساهمة في نهضة الأمة العربية في كبوتها الظالمة التي أوقعها منها رجال الاستشراق وأوانه ممن تتلمذوا على نظريات أساتذته، والتي أخرت مسيرة تقدم الأمة، وأبعدتها عن المشاركة في صنع مجتمع العلم والإنسان.
إذا في هذا الكتاب عما قلنا محاولة لرصد موجات الاستشراق وأعماله الأدبية والسياسية، الفكرية والاجتماعية، وتتبع لآثارها المختلفة على بلادنا العربية، الإيجابية والسلبية، المؤيدة والمعارضة، وتبيان لأبعاد الدراسات الاستشراقية على المناهج العربية، وأخطارها على المستقبل العربي، ولردود المنكرين العرب ومؤرخيهم في العقيدة والسياسة والأدب والتاريخ. ولإحاطة المؤلف بجميع جوانب موضوعه قسم دراسته إلى بابين، تكلم في أولهما عن الدور الذي لعبه الاستشراق في القضايا اللغوية والأدبية، وعن علاقته بالنهضة العربية، وبكتابها الذين تأثروا بمقولاته، وساروا على منهاجه، سواء في دراسة اللغة وتبسيط قواعد نحوها، أو في معرفة الأدب العامي وقضية التشكيك في تراثه القومي، أما الباب الثاني فعقده للحديث عن هيمنة الاستشراق السياسية والثقافية على المفاهيم العربية، مبيناً ظروفه المختلفة، ومعالمها في السيطرة والاحتلال.
