يؤطر الكاتب محمود حبوش رواية «حكاية الفتى الذي لم يضحك أبداً» في سياق تاريخي عبر كتابة "مقدمة المحقق" ابتدعها لتوحي للقارئ بأنه وقع على نص قديم، مع العلم بأن العمل بكامله هو من وحي خياله.
في تظهير الحكاية وُلد الفتى في الثلث الأخير من ليلة لا قمر فيها، بعد أن كان أبواه قد يئسا من خروجه إلى الدنيا، إذ أتم عشرة شهور في رحم أمه، وزاد فوق ذلك عدداً، من دون ظهور إمارة تدل على قرب ولادته. وُلد الفتى عظيم الُجثَّة، كبير الرأس مكتنز اللحم، ولسبب ما لا يعلمه إلا الخالق خُلق الفتى مُقطب الحاجبين غير ضحاك ولا بسام أو بكاء. حتى ظن أهل القرية أن به مس من شيطان، أو أن من وراءه شراً عظيماً وفساداً كبيراً فنعتوه ـبـ "الطفل الرجل"، و"الطفل العبقري"، و"الطفل العظيم" وغيرها من صفات، أما أبواه فاستبشرا أن من وراء هذا التقطيب الشديد، رجل قوي، حازم، تهابه السوقة، ولا يجرؤ عليه الأشرار.
ينشأ الفتى في رعاية والديه اللذان أوكلا أمر تعليمه إلى الكتّاب في مسجد القرية، وما هي إلا أشهراً معدودات حتى تفوق الفتى على أقرانه في حفظ آي القرآن، فتغيرت نظرة رجال القرية إليه وظنوا بالفتى الخير. فقد يكون ولياً من أولياء الله، بُعث فيهم لِحسن سيرتهم وحفاظهم على صلواتهم... تتوالى السنون حتى يصادف الفتى شيخاً جاء لزيارة زاوية القرية، ومنذ ذلك اللقاء يُعجب الشيخ به ويعرض عليه العمل نسّاخاً لقاء دينار يجريه له كل أسبوع، لتتطور العلاقة بين التلميذ وشيخه ويتبحر في علوم الأولين ومذاهب المتكلمين والفلاسفة، فكان هذا تمهيداً لإرساله إلى أمير حلب. وبعد لقاءه الأمير في قصره يدخل الفتى المجد من أوسع أبوابه عندما يقربه منه الأمير ويزوجه ويجعله من خلاصة بطانته وعليّة حاشيته.
