طُبع كتاب "أم القرى" لأول مرة عام 1317ه / 1899م). تتلخص فكرته في تخيّل مؤلفه عبد الرحمن الكواكبي انعقاد مؤتمر إسلامي جامع بمكة المكرمة على هامش شعائر الحج عام (1316ه / 1898م) بحضور ثلاثة وعشرين من المفكرين والمصلحين، تم اختيارهم بحيث يمثلون العالم الإسلامي شرقه وغربه، شماله وجنوبه؛ بدعوة من "السيد الفراتي"؛ وذلك لمناقشة قضية اسباب "الفتور العام" الذي سيطر على العالم الإسلامي، وكيف يمكن التخلص منه.
وفصول الكتاب عبارة عن سجل مفصل لاجتماعات هذه الجمعية التي عُرفت باسم "أم القرى"، والتي استغرقت أسبوعين كاملين.
حاول الكواكبي في كتابه هذا وكتابه الآخر "طبائع الإستبداد" الإجابة عن الإشكالية المزدوجة التي طُرحت في زمنه، وحاول معاصروه من النهضويين الإجابة عنها، ألا وهي: لماذا تأخر المسلمون؟ وكيف يمكن أن ينهضوا مجدداً؟ وخلال مقاربته قدم الكواكبي أفكاراً ملهمة بحق ليس لأبناء جيله فحسب؛ بل للأجيال اللاحقة التي لم تتوقف عن قراءة كتابيه؛ بحثاً عن حل لتلك الإشكالية التي لم تزل قائمة منذ ذلك الحين.
