Auteur prolifique dont on vient de fêter le septième centenaire de la mort dans le calendrier hégirien, le Damascain Ibn Taymiyya reste un des docteurs classiques de l’islam les plus lus aujourd’hui. Son esprit indépendant, souvent excessif et contesté, a exercé une forte influence à son époque avant de retrouver une actualité nouvelle par l’intermédiaire des Réformistes du siècle dernier puis de la mouvance salafiste. L’intérêt de son œuvre réside dans le fait qu’elle couvre l’ensemble des sciences musulmanes: elle se veut un immense effort de présentation du credo musulman et de la fonction de la raison au sein de celui-ci, sans minimiser sa dimension spirituelle, malgré la réputation de rigoriste de ce théologien juriste. Probablement suite aux troubles interreligieux survenus en Égypte en 721/1321, Ibn Taymiyya se résolut à rédiger sa fameuse Réponse valide à ceux qui ont altéré la religion du Messie (al-Ǧawāb al-ṣaḥīḥ li-man baddala dīn al-Masīḥ), qui est son ouvrage de polémique antichrétienne le plus célèbre, un des premiers imprimés au Caire en 1332/1905 et depuis lors sans cesse rééditée en langue arabe. Dans le présent livre, nous voyons comment le Damascain hanbalite répond à Élie de Nisibe, important évêque syro-oriental du Ve/Xie siècle, lequel eut des discussions théologiques de haute volée avec le vizir Abū al-Qāsim al-Maġribī, homme de grande culture et écrivain lui-même. Les questions abordées demeurent les mêmes au cours des siècles : le statut des Écritures sacrées, la question de l’Unité-Trinité de Dieu et celle de la médiation entre Dieu et l’homme. Mais Ibn Taymiyya réussit-il à convaincre ? Car s’il ne peut y avoir de contradiction entre foi et raison selon lui, la spiritualité qu’il promeut est loin d’être sans conséquence sur les plans communautaires, institutionnels et politiques.
