شهد تاريخ إيران خلال عصر الخلافة العربية جملة من الحركات المناهضة للخلافة تنوعت وتلونت بألوان مختلفة: فمنها المسلحة العلنية أو السرية التأمرية (الغلو الباطنية) أو الفكرية الشعوبية والزندقة، ولكن هدفها بقي واحداً لا يتغير وهو إسقاط الخلافة واستبدالها بحكم فارسي مقنع. ولعل المحرك الرئيسي وراء هذا الموقف أن قطاعات عديدة من الفرس لم تستسغ ذلك التلاحم التاريخي بين العروبة والغسلام حين حمل العرب راية الإسلام لإنقاذ البشرية من الظلم وإحلال الازدهار في الأمصار، فعملت جاهدة على إحباط المسيرة وخلق التناقضات والمعوقات.
وإذا كانت االمؤامرات قد فشلت في فترة الخلافة فإن سكان بلاد فارس نجحوا ابتداءاً من القرن الثالث الهجري/التاسع الميلادي في تكوين كيانات إقليمية سياسية عمقت روح الانفصال والتحدي وأكدت الروح الفارسية العنصرية، رغم أنها لم تستطع منفردة أن تؤلف كياناً إيرانياً موحداً أو قوياً بل إبنها كانت في أحسن صورها وحدات سياسية عسكرية متحاربة ومتنافسة لإقليم غير متجانس عرقياً ومتباين اجتماعياً واقتصادياً.
لقد زاد الوضع تعقيداً ما اتسمت به هذه الكيانات السياسية المتعاقبة على الحكم في إيران من نهج عدواني تجاه الخلافة والعراق بالذات بحيث باتت الحرب والعداء ضده أسلوباً ضرورياً لتحقيق أهداف المتسلطين على الحكم في إيران ولإشباع العقدة الفارسية التاريخية تجاهه. والأغرب من ذلك أن أنظمة غيرة فارسية حكمت إيران مثل السلاجة والخوارزمية والمغولية تبنت نفس العقدة الفارسية خدمة لمصلحتها الذاتية في استمرار سيطرتها على الحكم في إيران.
وبعد سلسلة من الدويلات المغولية والإيلخانية والتركمانية التي قامت في أعقاب حكم هولاكو ظهرت الدولة الصفوية عنوان لحركة دينية-سياسية قصد بها استعادة الهوية الفارسية لإيران بكل مضامينها الثقافية والعنصرية المعادية للعروبة والمنحرفة عن الإسلام الصحيح.
على أن الأمر لم ينته فقد شهد تاريخ إيران السياسي سلسلة من الحركات الدموية مثلت صراعاً مستمراً بين قوى وتيارات وأطراف سياسية متناقصة لا تزال إيران تحصد نتائجه في تاريخها المعاصر.
وفي هذا المجال تبحث فصول هذا الكتاب في تاريخ بلاد فارس السياسي منذ الفتح العربي الإسلامي لها حتى مشارف التاريخ الحديث حين بدأ الصفويون يسيطرون على مقاليد الحكم فيها.
