لقد شهد القرن السابع الهجري تحولاً خطيراً في التاريخ العربي الإسلامي، نتيجة لاجتياح المغول المدمر للأقاليم الشرقية والشمالية للعالم الإسلامي وسقوط الخلافة العباسية عام 656 هـ/1258م واستقرار المغول في العراق، كما شهد ذلك القرن سقوط الدولة الأيوبية في مصر والشام على يد المماليك الذين أحكموا سيطرتهم على هذين القطرين.
وكان في عزم المغول وخططهم إجتياح سائر الأقاليم العربية الأخرى بدءاً من بلاد الشام، فمصر، ثم الشمال الأفريقي بأسره، وكان من الطبيعي أن يطمعوا في غزو الحجاز واليمن ومناطق شبه جزيرة العرب الأخرى.
ولم يكن أمام سلاطين المماليك إلا أن يتأهبوا لمجابهة تلك الخطر الماحق وردعه بكل ما لديهم من تضحية، لينجوا من براثن ما عهد عن المغول من الإبادة الجماعية والتدمير الحضاري دون اكتراث. لذلك كان اختيار أبي الفداء وسيرته ومنهجه في كتابيه (تقويم البلدان) و(المختصر في أخبار البشر) وذلك العدة أسباب منها: أنه كان أحد أقطاب الحرب في مرحلة تاريخية مهمة من التاريخ العربي، دفاعاً عن حدود الخلافة العربية الإسلامية بوجه أطماع الإفرنج والمغول.
أما العامل الآخر فيرجع الى أنه صار نموذجاً لأمراء شغفوا بالعلم والمعرفة، رغم الظروف الصعبة فأبوا الفداء من الرجال الذين خدموا العلم والمعرفة في ظل الصراعات السياسية والعسكرية السائدة في عهده.
وقد جاءت هذه الدراسة في بابين أولهما سيرته وثانيهما منهجيته وتحليلها في كتابيه (التقويم) (والمختصر).
