"فجأة تقول الحكاية... وجد نضال نفسه بين الحديد الأسود، في قفص ساخن تعلوه أشعة الشمس التي تنغرز في الجلد مثل سكين جزار ماهر تسكن قاع العظم. كان ما يزال صغيراً لم يصل الخامسة والعشرين من عمره بعد، نحيفاً مثل خيزران والده التي لم تكن تتروى وهي تتوزع على ظهره تاركة خيوطاً دقيقة لا تمحى، كان بعد أن انتهى من قراءة "الثابت والمتحول" مأخوذاً "بشرق المتوسط"، مشاهد العرب الضاجة، الأقفاص الحديدية بعدد البشر، شراهة القتل والحقد الأبدي كما لو كان متأصلاً، تاريخ الدماء المسكوبة على خارطة التاريخ العربي".
هكذا ابتدأت حكاية الهذيان والخرافة، والرجل، حكاية القفص الحديدي الأسود، والدمى التي تحركت على ظهيرة أحد الأيام القائظة قبل أربعة أعوام من الآن عندما حرك البهلوان الدمى، يومها كانت بداية نضال الحقيقية.
