يحاول المؤلف من موقعه كطبيب متخصص في العيادة النفسية أن يعطي فكرة عن الذات في التحليل النفسي وذلك من خلال عمله ومن خلال ما كان يقوم به من بحث وتنقيب لكي ينقلها إلى طلاب علم النفس في إطار نظرية متماسكة. والمؤلف لا يطل على هذا الميدان الفكري الغامض والصعب من مدخل الاهتمام الثقافي والفطري، بل هو مقصده من عيادته وممارسته للطب النفسي مدينة بيروت، وعبر عصر الحرب الدائمة، وما خلفته من نماذج الانهيار الإنساني الفاجعية. والكتاب بالإضافة إلى ذلك هو بحث في الحب والقمع لا في مجتمع معيّن، بل في المجتمع الإنساني أصلاً.
