يُضيء هذا الكتاب جوانب عدة من حياة وفكر الشاعر الفيلسوف الألماني فريدريك شيللر (1759- 1805) الذي حرَّك أوتار الطبيعة الألمانية كلِّها، وكان إرتباطه البالغ بحقوق الجنس البشري حافزاً لتعاطفه مع الأمم كلَّها، فهو راهب العقل والحقيقة.
إنه يشخص التطور والمثال الإنساني بشكلين رئيسين، فهو يحلم بإصلاح الفرد وفقاً للقانون الأخلاقي وبإصلاح المجتمع تبعاً للحق، ويطمح إلى تأسيس الإنسانيَّة إنطلاقاً من حقوقها، لكن من دون إستخدام العنف، بل عن طريق تطوير الميول الكبرى للقلب الإنساني تطويراً كاملاً.
ولم يفقد شيللر ثقته في التطور الإنساني، لكنه رأى أنَّ الخلاص الفردي هو من دون أيِّ شك شرط أساس للخلاص الإجتماعي وأنَّه من الواجب أولاً أنْ يتحقق.
