إن أمثال العرب هي إحدى نتاجات العقل العربي في الجاهلية، وإحدى نتاجه بعد الجاهلية. فإذا كان الشعر مستودع أخبار العرب، وديوان أسرارهم، فالأمثال جاءت رديفة لذلك الشعر من قبل ومن بعد. فالدرس لأمثال العرب في جاهليتها وإسلامها يظهر سعة الساحة التي غطتها الأمثال، أنها اشتملت على موضوعات نفسية منها الذي تحدث عن طباع الجبان والشجاع، والوفي والغادر، والصادق والكاذب، كما أنها غاصت في دراسة طبائع الرجال والنساء والأطفال، والأصدقاء والأعداء والأتقياء، ولم يكونوا غرباء عن بيئتهم الصحراوية البدوية فقد أخذوا منها فوائد جمّة، فصاغوا أمثالا تحدثت عن طباع الحيوانات الغادرة المتوحشة، أو المألوفة من الناس، فسحبوها اتجاه الحياة الاجتماعية بجوانبها السلوكية والأخلاقية فشبهوا الغادر بالذئب والشجاع بالأسد. إن أمثالهم كانت مرآة حياتهم..، فكانت صادقة مطابقة للواقع أحيانا كثيرة، وقد نراها خاطئة أحيانا أخرى، وقد نحكم على فسادها لتأثرنا بمقاييس العصر الذي نحن فيه، وعلى العموم؛ وجدت الأمثال ميدانا خصيبا لفوائد تربوية، ولغوية، وتاريخية، واجتماعية، ونفسية إنسانية،.. صاغها ذلك العربي بقوة لغته، وفصاحة بيانه، على نحو موجز، مكثف المعنى بحكم السبك، بليغ التصوير…
وعمل المؤلف في هذا الكتاب انصب على مطالعة كتب التراث: أمثال مجمع الأمثال للميداني، وحدائق الأزهر لابن عاصم، وجمهرة الأمثال لأبي هلال وغيرهم فاختار أمثالا قدر أنها مازالت حية فرتبها وفق الترتيب الأبجدي، ثم عني بشرح الغامض منها، مستعيناً بالشعر العربي أو الآية الكريمة أو أي أثر آخر لتوضيح المقصود من المعنى… معتمداً على المعاجم مثل لسان العرب على نحو أساسي، وغيره في درجة تالية.
