جاءت فكرة هذا الكتاب من خلال الانتشار الواسع لهذه الأقراص والتي غالباً ما تسمى بالـ"سي دي" CD حيث بدأ انتشارها مطرداً في السنوات الأخيرة وقد اختلفت تسمياتها ولكنها لم تختلف مكوناتها وأساس عملها فمنهم من يسميها الأقراص المدمجة ومنهم من يسميها الأقراص البصرية ومنهم من يسميها الأقراص الليزرية.
لذا ارتأى الباحث أن يبدأ كتابه بمقدمة تحدث فيها عن تطور خزن المعلومات ومن ثم تطرق لموضوع تكنولوجيا الأقراص المدمجة وأهم صفاتها وأنواعها وتطورها كما بين في الفصل الأول ما هو الاختلاف بين النظام التماثلي والنظام الرقمي، وذلك بهدف توضيح عمل هذه الأقراص. أما الفصل الثالث فخصصه لموضوع سواقات هذه الأقراص ومم تتكون وركز حول أشعة الليزر التي هي أساس عمل هذه الأقراص حيث قارته بين أشعة الليزر والضوء العادي وكذلك بين مواصفات هذه الأشعة.
