تشكل المجموعة القصصية "كؤوس فارغة" للكاتب سعد العتيق مغامرة فنية وجمالية في آن واحد، سواء على المستوى الأدبي أم الحياتي، فالقارىء للنص يجد إنه إزاء تحول للشخصية، دلالي نفسي من حالة الخضوع إلى حالة الرفض، وهذا البناء المتداخل في تركيبة النص يتم التعبير عنه في مشهد قصصي يحيل إلى عالم العمل ومحاولة استغلال المرأة العاملة كأنثى، مما يستدعي إعادة قراءة لذلك المشهد " ... في آخر الضرورات استدعيتها إلى مكتبك، فجاءتك وكنتُ أنا بالطبع معها كالعادة، وجاء ساقي المؤسسة، فأمرته أن يأتي لنا بكأسين من شرابٍ لم تسألنا عن رغبتنا فيه، فإذا بها، تنذرك رافعة يدها اليمنى، وباليد اليسرى تشير إليَّ بأن نغادر .. أمسكت بيدي، ومضينا بعيداً بلا عودة .. تركنا أمكنة قذرةً، وكؤوساً فارغةً، من هذا الأنموذج يسلط الكاتب الضوء على مشاهد حياتية أخرى، يتخذ فيها دور الراوي العليم، الذي ليس له دور فيما يحدث، فهو يروي ويرى الشخوص من الخارج، وبعد وقوع الحوادث، الأمر الذي يجعل من القول المنطوي على محاكاة الواقع قولاً قابلاً للفهم، وعبر تسلسل للنص يقود إلى اتساق يربط بين بداية كل قصة ونهايتها، فينتقل من حالة إلى أخرى، يفسر من خلالها إقدام أبطاله على القيام بسلوك معين، فكانت شخوصه هي ذات وموضوع بنفس الوقت.
