من الواضح لكل أحد أنه يدرك نفسه ويشهدها، وأنه يعرف نفسه بلا واسطة شيء آخر، بل الأشياء الآخر إنما تعرف بواسطة نفسه، إمّا بإحاطة نفسه عليها، وإمّا بحضور صورة منها عند النفس تحكي عن ذي الصورة، وتصير وسيلة بها يعرف الإنسان صاحب الصورة بقدر ما تحكي الصورة عنه.
ومن البديهي أن المعرفة بالله تعالى لا تحصل بهاتين الطريقتين، أما الأولى فلعدم إمكان الإحاطة بالله تعالى، لكونه محيطاً بالجميع غير محاط، وأما الثانية فلعدم كونه تعالى ذا صورة تحكيه ويمكن معرفته بها.
فالمعرفة الكاملة به تعالى مستحيلة، ولطالب المعرفة أن يلتجيء في معرفة عزّ وجلّ إلى طريقين آخرين تحصل بهما معرفة ناقصة، هي حدّ معرفة الإنسان بالله تعالى، وهما المعرفة بالآيات والأسماء.
وهنا طريق آخر يمكن الوصول به إلى الله تعالى - نحوا من الوصول، هو حدّ الممكن من الوصول إلى الواجب.
وتلك هي معرفة بالله عزّ وجلّ بأسمائه، والكتاب الكريم هو المنادي الأول للترغيب إلى المعرفة من هذا الطريق: ﴿وَلِلَّهِ الْأَسْمَاءُ الْحُسْنَى فَادْعُوهُ بِهَا وَذَرُوا الَّذِينَ يُلْحِدُونَ فِي أَسْمَائِهِ سَيُجْزَوْنَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ﴾... [7/ 110]، فالإسم هو ما يعرف به المسمّى، والمسمّى شيء ثابت موجودٌ في ظرفه الخاصّ، ولذلك يعبّر عن الأجل المحتوم بـ "أجل مسمّى"، فإنّه لو تغيّر لخرج عن كونه مسمّى هذا الإسم.
وبذلك نعرف أن الإسم الحقيقي ما يعرّف مسماه، والأسماء المعمولة عندنا - مثل زيد وعمرو - أسماء اعتبارية لا حقيقيّة، وبعبارة أخرى هي أسماء الأسماء، فإنّ السامع لإسم زيد لا يعرف شيئاً من مشخّصاته، بخلاف ما إذا كان الإسم اسماً حقيقياً.
