يعد هذا الكتاب من الكتب الجامعة لمعارف عصر المؤلف, ضمنه مؤلفه أنباذاً من العلوم والآداب والمعارف, وجعله في أربعة وثمانين باباً, من أحسن الفنون, متوجة بألفاظ كأنها الدر المكنون, فقد اشتمل فيه على كل فن ظريف حيث جمع فيه لطائف وظرائف عديدة من منتخبات الكتب النفيسة المفيدة. واستدل فيه بآيات كثيرة من القرآن والسنة الشريفة. كما تناول حكايات حسنة عن الصالحين, والأمثال الشعرية, والألفاظ اللغوية, والحكايات الجدية, والنوادر الهزلية, ومن الغرائب والدقائق, والأشعار والرقائق, ما تشف بذكره الأسماع وتقر برؤيته العيون, وينشرح بمطالعته كل قلب محزون. وكان من أهم ما تناوله المؤلف في هذا الكتاب من مواضيع ما يلي: مباني الإسلام, العقل والذكاء والحمق وذمه وغير ذلك, القرآن وفضله, العلم والأدب وفضل العالم والمتعلم, الآداب والحكم وما أشبه ذلك, الأمثال السائرة, البيان والبلاغة والفصاحة وغيرها, البخل والشح وذكر البخلاء, الطعام وآدابه والضيافة, العفو والحلم والصفح, الوفاء بالوعد وحسن العهد, كتمان السر وتحصينه, الغدر والخيانة والسرقة والعداوة, الشجاعة وثمرتها والحروب وتدبيرها, ذكر أسماء الشجعان وذكر الأبطال وطبقاتهم, المدح والثناء وشكر النعمة, ذكر الدواب والوحوش والطير والهوام, ذكر نبذة من عجائب المخلوقات وصفاتهم, خلق الجان, ذكر البحار وما فيها من العجائب, ذكر عجائب الأرض, ذكر المعادن والأحجار وخواصها, الأصوات والألحان وذكر الغناء وغيرها, ذكر المغنين والمطربين وأخبارهم وغيرها, ذكر العشق ومن بلي به, ذكر رقائق الشعر والمواليا والدوبيت, ذكر النساء وصفاتهن ونكاحهن, تحريم الخمر وذمها والنهي عنها. وغيرها من المواضيع المثيرة والشيقة والهامة.
الأبشيهي: هو محمد بن أحمد بن منصور بن أحمد بن عيسى البهاء أبو الفتح بن الشهاب أبي العباس الأبشيهي المحلي الشافعي. ولد سنة تسعين وسبعمائة بأبشويه, وحفظ بها القرآن, وصلى به وهو ابن عشر. وقد تميزت مؤلفاته بالإحاطة المعرفية لعصره وشمولها. ومن أهم مؤلفاته: صنا
