ارتحل الصليبيون الأوائل من أوروبا الغربية، عبر الطرق البرية؛ ولكن منذ الحملة الثالثة، حملت السفن الغزاة الصليبيين، وكان الملك ريتشارد الأول قد ذهب أولاً إلى صقلية، ومنها سافر باتجاه عكا، فاحتل قبرص قبل الوصول إلى عكا، ثم باع عكا فيما بعد للملك غي لوزنان، الذي كان ملك القدس، ووقع في الأسر في معركة حطين.
وكان من أبرز ملوك قبرص من أسرة لوزنان بطرس الأول، الذي ادعى وراثة تاج مملكة القدس، وقد اهتم وانشغل بالإعداد لحملة صليبية كبيرة، فزار عواصم الغرب الأوروبي، من أجل تجنيد المرتزقة، وتحصيل السفن الحربية. وقد أمدته البابوية بمساعدات كبيرة جداً.
تمكن بطرس من اجتياح الإسكندرية عام 1365م، ملحقاً بها دماراً هائلاً، ظلت آثاره حتى العصر الحديث. وعاصر بطرس في فرنسا الشاعر غليوم ي ماخوت، الذي جمع أخبار الحملة من الذين شاركوا فيها، ونظمها شعراً بروح صليبية متعصبة.إنها المرة الأولى التي تجري فيها ترجمة هذه القصيدة التاريخية الطويلة كاملة، وبأمانة ودقة، وطبعها بشكل لائق.
