يحاول هذا الكتاب العملي إتمام كتاب أساسيات الكيمياء التحليلية، حيث يصف الفصل الأول منه الأساليب المختبرية، ويتضمن أيضاً السلامة المختبرية، بينما تتبع الفصول الخمسة اللاحقة ترتيب الكتاب المنهجي نفسه وكما يأتي: الوزنية، الحجمية، الطيفية، الكهربائية، التحليلية، وأساليب الفصل.
ولقد ابتدأ الكتاب مقدمة قصيرة من الأساسيات مع مصادر للمواد النظرية في الكيمياء التحليلية، وتتبع الأساسيات طرائق عمل مفصلة، تشرح أو تفصل الملاحظات لبعض تفاصيل طريقة العمل، حيث أنه على الطالب قراءة طريقة العمل بأكملها، وبضمنها الملاحظات قبل البدء بالتجربة.
ويتضمن الكتاب العملي العديد من التجارب التقليدية التي مر عليها الزمن مثل التعيين الوزني للكلوريد وتعيين الحديد في الخام بالتسحيح مع برمنكنات البوتاسيوم.
لقد أعطى الكتاب إهتماماً للطرائق الحديثة والمفيدة للعينات الأكثر أهمية، والتي تتضمن تعيين النيكوتين في التبغ، والكلوكوز في الدم والنتريت في اللحم والزنك في الشعر والفلوريد في معجون الأسنان، ولم تعط طرائق عمل لطيف الأشعة تحت الحمراء والرنين النووي المغناطيسي، بينما تضمنت تجربة واحدة لطريقة الكروماتوغرافيا الغازية.
وعادة تعطي هذه الطرائق في فصول مختبر الكيمياء العضوية، أن بعض تجارب طويلة إلى حد ما، وقد تصبح غير ملائمة للصفوف الكبيرة ذات جدول زمني محدد، ومع ذلك فقد تصبح ذات قيمة إذا جعلت تجارب إختبارية عند نهاية الفصل الدراسي، حيث يتمكن الطالب من العمل وبأشراف أقل.
