سقطت وأنا ما زلت معبأ بالتحدي ورغبة الانتقام. قلت له وأنا هابط: يا ذا الجلالة، هب أن دماغي أتلف بتلك الهبطة، وأنك كسرت عظامي وأذقتني المر بألف لون وطعم، فلن أرفع نظري إليك، بالتوبة، أبداً. فإما أن تميتني ميتة كاملة، أصيلة. ميتتي الخاصة التي استحق، حيث لا يصعب عليك موت، وإما أن تحضر نفسك لملاقاتي دائماً. في كل ليلة. رفعني بعض العائدين من سهر المضافة وأدخلوني إلى البيت، إلى الصومعة حيث أذهلهم حزن كهرب وصمتها ونحولها. والدها، الشيخ، قال لي في صباح اليوم التالي: "يا أستاذ علي، ليست عبادة محمود تلك التي تكون على حساب زوجتك وعيالك!" وجاءني الضحك عندما قدرت أن الشيخ بذكره للعيال، إنما يشير إلى جنين حرام بستة أشهر!
